Designing a strategy around gamification methods
Project Overview
Executive leadership at Resideo wanted to develop a strategy around the use of gamification methods to increase user engagement throughout a smart home app.
My Role
I developed Resideo’s stance on the use of gamification while directing and collaborating on design explorations.
The Team
I collaborated with a consulting gamification expert to tackle this project.
The Challenge
Create a strategy around a new subject matter in under a month.
Additionally, overcome baggage the term “gamification” seemed to have. Several stakeholders had a very negative connotation with it and vocalized their concerns.

As the smart-home expert, I was paired with a consulting gamification expert to do a deep dive and explore a wide array of initial concepts and methods.
Business and User Story Generation
I led brainstorming sessions with stakeholders to identify key business needs and generate user stories that could be designed and developed against.
Refined Iteration
Directing and collaborating on several rounds of iteration resulted in a short list of gamification methods and concept wireframes.
Directional Roadmap
I presented the directional roadmap to stakeholders and leadership, illustrating how gamification could be used successfully in three phases, encompassing both short-term and long-term planning.
Outcomes
I alleviated stakeholder concerns by clearly defining gamification and its scope within our business and user goals.
Resideo’s executive leadership approved the roadmap, and design work was initiated on phase 1.
Summary
It was fulfilling to do a deep dive into a new subject area and find ways to creatively apply it to existing and upcoming projects alike.
